No license
You do not need a license to steer motorboats with a maximum power of 11.26 kilowatts (equivalent to 15 horsepower) or, in terms of length, motorboats up to 5 meters or sailboats up to 6 meters, if you want to sail during the day and do not need to go more than 2 miles from the coast.
Of course, you must be over 18 years old or have the authorization of a guardian if you are over 16 years old.
Navigation license
If you want to steer motor boats up to 6 meters in length, or drive a jet ski, you must have a basic navigation license, which is obtained by taking two hours of theory and four hours of practice, and a medical certificate. There is no exam, but you must know the basic knowledge for daily maneuvers in port, basic rights of way to avoid collisions, knots, essential checks before going out to sea, safety elements or meteorology.
With this license, you will be able to sail during the day, and up to 2 miles from the coast.
Basic Navigation Skipper (PNB)
With this qualification you will be able to take sailing and motor boats up to 8 meters, and jet skis. You will be able to sail up to a maximum of 5 miles, although navigation can be by day or night.
They have mandatory practices of navigation and use of radio communications in the Maritime Mobile Service, of the equipment on board and the regulation of radiotelephone communications, both for routine communications and for emergency situations.
Recreational Craft Skipper (PER)
The PER authorizes you to govern motor or sailing boats up to 15 meters in length without power limit, and to navigate in a line parallel to the coast of 12 miles, both in day and night navigation. It also allows you to navigate between any island of the Balearic or Canary Islands. To obtain this title you need 16 hours of Safety and Navigation Practices, a Short Range Radio Operator course of 12 hours, as well as to take an exam before the Administration.
The SuperPER allows you to steer pleasure boats up to 24 meters in length and to sail from the mainland to the Balearic Islands and vice versa, making a 24-hour navigation practice.
The PER Professional, for which you need to take an STCW-approved Basic Safety Training course, allows you to work professionally in some areas of pleasure craft chartering.
Yacht Skipper
With the title of Yacht Skipper you will be able to take boats up to 24 meters in length and sail up to a maximum distance of 150 miles from the coast. In order to obtain this qualification you must have previously obtained the PER, and pass an exam before the Administration.
With it you will be able to provide transport services, perform maneuvers in ports and beaches, sea trials and lifeguarding, or provide tourist services and recreational fishing with up to 6 passengers on board.
To obtain it, in addition to passing a theoretical exam, it is necessary to complete 48 hours of practical training and pass a psycho-technical test.
Yacht Captain
To obtain this title you must have the Yacht Skipper Title, and with it you will be able to steer boats up to 24 meters in length and navigate without limit of distance to the coast.
