They are more expensive than inflatable boards, are heavier and require more storage space, although they provide a more stable and faster ride.

The origins of Paddle Surfing or Stand Up Paddle Surfing

The sport has its origins in Hawaii, where it was known as "hoe he'e nalu". The practice dates back to the 1940s when surf instructors in Waikiki began using paddles to help them ride the waves and get a better view of their students. The modern version of paddle board surfing began on the North Shore of Oahu in the early 2000s, when surfers used it as a way to stay in shape during the off-season.
